PostgreSQL in Redgate Monitor: configuration advice, backup monitoring, Windows support and AlloyDB

More teams are adding PostgreSQL to their estates as they start new projects. The databases are new, but the expectation is the same: one place to see what’s healthy, what’s at risk and what needs attention.

This release brings PostgreSQL monitoring in Redgate Monitor closer to what you already get for SQL Server. It adds backup monitoring and support for PostgreSQL on Windows, and AlloyDB joins the managed services we already cover.

Spot misconfigured PostgreSQL servers across your estate with Configuration Advice (v14.30)

PostgreSQL server overview pages now include a Configuration advice tab. It shows the instance’s current parameters alongside recommendations for the settings that matter most, so you can sanity-check a server without years of PostgreSQL-specific experience.

The estate-level Server configuration page (previously SQL Server configuration) also has a new PostgreSQL tab. It lists each monitored server’s critical settings and warnings in one place, across your whole PostgreSQL estate without going instance by instance.

Know which PostgreSQL instances are falling behind on backups (v14.40)

Backup monitoring for PostgreSQL now supports pgBackRest. Within Monitor the Backups page now has a new PostgreSQL tab that shows the backup history of your monitored instances. A recovery point objective (RPO) graph counts instances by time since their last backup, so you can see at a glance which ones have drifted.

From there, drill down into any backup set to see its latest full, differential and incremental backups, any errors, and the health and encryption status of each destination.

Monitor PostgreSQL on Windows alongside SQL Server (v14.35)

Windows is home for a lot of SQL Server teams, and it’s a natural place to run PostgreSQL too, whether that’s a department’s application database or a system you want to keep close to the rest of your stack, Redgate Monitor now supports PostgreSQL instances running on Windows.  Those instances appear in the same estate view as your SQL Server instances, with the same alerting and overview pages.

See the PostgreSQL on Windows docs.

AlloyDB joins the managed PostgreSQL services Monitor supports (v14.39)

Redgate Monitor now supports AlloyDB for PostgreSQL, Google Cloud’s fully managed, PostgreSQL-compatible database.  With AlloyDB, Redgate Monitor now supports five managed PostgreSQL services across AWS, Azure and Google Cloud:

  • Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL
  • Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL
  • Azure Database for PostgreSQL Flexible Server
  • Google Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL
  • AlloyDB for PostgreSQL

Whichever cloud your PostgreSQL runs on, you can monitor it alongside the rest of your estate.  If your AlloyDB instances are on a different network from your Base Monitor, you may need to set up connectivity first. See adding servers on a different network from your Base Monitor in the AlloyDB docs.
