Aurora PostgreSQL monitoring: cluster and instance visibility, in Redgate Monitor

Teams running Aurora PostgreSQL today have limited options for keeping on top of cluster health. CloudWatch gives you raw metrics and alarms, but no unified view of performance and health of nodes within a cluster, and no built-in way to go from an infrastructure metric to the query behind it.

Redgate Monitor now closes that gap. You can monitor reader nodes for the first time, alongside the writer node support we already had, and get a cluster-wide view that ties node-level health back to overall cluster performance. Rather than a raw feed of every metric CloudWatch exposes, we've curated the metrics and charts that matter most for diagnosing Aurora PostgreSQL problems, so teams who know PostgreSQL well but are newer to Aurora can see what needs attention without having to work it out for themselves.

Cost is also a big consideration, CloudWatch and AWS Performance Insights both charge based on usage, so the more closely you watch your clusters, the more it costs. That's exactly why a lot of teams end up building their own Grafana setup instead. It saves on the CloudWatch bill, but it takes real effort to build and maintain, still needs account-level access for every cluster, and doesn't give you query performance data at all.

For teams managing a handful of clusters, that's inconvenient. For teams managing hundreds, it doesn't scale. There's no single place to see what's happening across the estate, no alerting tuned to Aurora PostgreSQL out of the box, and no straightforward path from "this cluster has a problem" to "this query on this reader is the cause.

A top-down troubleshooting workflow

Redgate Monitor now gives you two new pages that work together:

  • Cluster page: is this cluster healthy, and which instance should you look at? A health overview, query performance summary, instance summary, and cluster-wide metrics, all in one view. Query performance is aggregated across every node in the cluster, so instead of checking each instance one by one to find a problem query, as you would in CloudWatch, you can immediately see which query is the issue and where it's running.
  • Instance page: what's happening on this instance, and why? Detailed diagnostics, server configuration, and running processes.
