Headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, Republic Bank is one of the most innovative and forward-looking banks in the US, with 42 full-service banking centers across five states and assets of more than $6.2 billion.
Database deployments involved hand writing scripts, which were then reviewed by multiple people. This was hugely time-consuming and error-prone, and often meant one person in the team became a bottle-neck for delivery.
SQL Compare and SQL Data Compare are now the de facto comparison and deployment tools in use. Releases can be managed remotely, and deployments times have been significantly reduced from 1 hour 15 to just 15 minutes.
"We’ve freed up the DBA team by 70-80%. That’s the ROI, and the leadership team can understand that too"
Headquartered in Louisville, Kentucky, Republic Bank is one of the most innovative and forward-looking banks in the US, with 42 full-service banking centers across five states. With assets of $6.2 billion, it was named Best Bank in Kentucky in Newsweek’s annual rankings, America’s Best Banks 2022.
Dedicated to meeting the needs of personal customers, small business owners, and large corporations alike, the bank offers a full range of competitive products and a highly personalized service. To remain at the forefront in a fast-moving sector, it also strives to be a technically advanced community bank that highly values IT and technology within the business.
To support this, Chris Yates, Senior Vice President, Managing Director, manages a team of DBAs and developers who are responsible for managing 1,400 databases – and growing – used by around 100 applications. Together with the rest of the IT department, they are akin to an in-house software company.
“In a previous life, SQL Server database comparisons and deployments were run using manually compiled scripts.”
Chris Yates, Senior Vice President | Managing Director of Data and Architecture
Around 10% of Republic Bank’s employees are now in their IT division. This shows the strategic importance for the bank to stay ahead of the curve and deliver value to the business and customers quickly.
Their database deployments involved writing scripts by hand, which were then reviewed by multiple people. This was hugely time-consuming and error-prone, and often meant one person in the team became a
bottle-neck for delivery.
Chris Yates, Senior Vice President | Managing Director of Data and Architecture, knew they needed to resolve this issue and find a way to replace their manual process with one that was streamlined, stable, and far more reliable. This led him to Redgate SQL Compare, the industry standard for comparing SQL Server schemas and creating deployment scripts in minutes.
“SQL Compare cut down deployment times from one hour and a quarter to less than 15 minutes.”
Chris Yates, Senior Vice President | Managing Director of Data and Architecture
Chris decided to couple SQL Compare with Redgate’s SQL Data Compare, which compares and deploys SQL Server database contents, and they are now the de facto comparison and deployment tools in use. The tools are used daily, releases can also be managed remotely, and deployments times have been significantly reduced, with deployment times down from one hour and a quarter to less than 15 minutes.
Republic Bank are now releasing database changes over 500 times a year and, with SQL Compare, the process has become standard working practice. All the database code is in version control and, once changes from different development branches are merged, SQL Compare is used to perform the comparison and generate the deployment script for review.
Reviewing all of the code in one place is much easier, and reduces both complexity and the risk of error, resulting in far less system downtime. Because SQL Compare makes it easy for anyone in the team to pick up a release, run it, and move on, everyone in the team is freed up to spend time on other valuable tasks. It makes tracking down deployment issues easier too. From time to time, the team will be asked ‘Did this get released?’ or ‘I’m missing something’. With SQL Compare, they save all of the scripts, so they have an audit trail they can go back through and check what was deployed, and when.
Chris also liked the support that came with SQL Compare and SQL Data Compare, which they could call on whenever they had a question or query: “The Redgate support team are excellent and really attentive, They’re very knowledgeable, and we always get a quick response, which is refreshing.”
To summarize the impact of implementing SQL Compare and SQL Data Compare, Chris outlines: “We’ve freed up the DBA team by 70-80%. That’s the ROI, and the leadership team can understand that too.”
