How Women Are Redefining What It Means To Work In Tech

It’s ‘Women in Tech‘ week and to celebrate we’re featuring staff stories which highlight the creativity and power that underpin modern technology. What is often thought of as a world of systems and logic, its true foundation lies in people and the stories that drive us to imagine, build and create a better and more connected world.

Inspiration comes from unexpected places

Diparati Sen, Product Designer here at Redgate, has had a journey which has been anything but straightforward. Before joining us, Diparati faced redundancy and visa uncertainty that led her to take an unexpected role in hospitality. What started as a short-term decision became one of the most formative experiences of her career.

“In hospitality, feedback is immediate and unfiltered. You see the impact of your decisions in real time. It taught me more about design than some full years in tech.”

Working as a café supervisor helped her refine skills that every great designer relies on: problem-solving, decision-making and reading real-world feedback quickly. It also showed her something she rarely experienced in tech at the time, a workplace where women led at every level.

“It made me realise how much mental energy I’d been using just navigating those dynamics in tech, energy I didn’t even know I was spending until I experienced an environment where I didn’t have to.”

Those months reshaped how she thinks about leadership and influence. Whether she’s designing software or running a team, it’s still about understanding context, balancing priorities and delivering experiences that make a difference to people’s working lives.

“Resilience isn’t about bouncing back unchanged. It’s about adapting, learning and becoming something different than you were. Sometimes stronger, sometimes softer, always more complete.”

Building strength in connection

A member of our Facilities and Reception team, Dawn Nair-Bartlett, applies that same principle of making things run better at Redgate by bringing the practical and technical together in a way which ensures we’re always moving forward. Her days are spent making sure our offices operate smoothly, supporting colleagues and visitors, and keeping projects and spaces in order. In addition to her day job, she’s studying contemporary psychology and counseling which lends her further insight into how people work together, problem solve and manage when the heat is on in fast-paced environments.

“As the first point of contact, being a receptionist is about more than welcoming visitors. It’s about listening, observing and understanding what people need, even when they don’t say it.”

It’s this level of attention and professionalism that allows our teams to stay focused and creative. From maintaining an efficient environment to helping people perform at their best, her work strengthens the foundation that technical innovation is built on.

“In a world increasingly driven by automation, skills like communication, observation and empathy aren’t ‘soft skills’; they’re a powerful asset.”

Shaping the future of tech

Between them, they shine a light on the depth and variety of talent throughout Redgate. Women here are shaping technology not just through design, engineering and research, but also through operations, customer experience and leadership. Every perspective adds to how we build better tools, stronger systems, and smarter ways of working.

Progress in technology is driven by collaboration, curiosity and courage, qualities that are not defined by gender, but by passion for solving problems and improving how the world works. We’re proud to celebrate women for continually redefining what it means to work in tech today.

This blog post forms part of Women in Tech Week and we’re proud to partner with She Can Code to highlight and support the voices of women across the industry.

Together, we’re championing the fact that a career in technology can take many forms, and that diversity of background and perspective drives innovation. Our collaboration focuses on sharing real stories, practical advice and visible role models to inspire more women to join, stay and thrive in tech.

Inclusive Engineering at Redgate

In mid 2024, one of Redgate’s coaches, Clare, pulled together a team to focus on improving inclusivity within Redgate’s Engineering organisation. This group was designed to work alongside the wider company initiatives, under the guidance of Engineering leadership. Inclusivity is a very broad topic, and the group wanted to avoid becoming overwhelmed with all the
