A global manufacturer of process instrumentation, VEGA Grieshaber develops and manufactures sensors for the measurement of level, point level and pressure, as well as software for process control systems.
The team were spending hours writing scripts in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and making small corrections in Visual Studio, which led to errors in code.
By implementing SQL Prompt, the team were able to save time writing SQL and responding to user requests faster and more safely.
A global manufacturer of process instrumentation, VEGA Grieshaber develops and manufactures sensors for the measurement of level, point level and pressure, as well as software for process control systems.
For more than 60 years now, they have developed solutions to demanding measuring tasks and turned these into reality: for chemical and pharmaceutical plants, food and beverage manufacture, drinking water supply and sewage treatment plants, landfills, mining operations, power generation, oil platforms, recycling, shipping and aerospace industries.
VEGA employs over 2,400 people worldwide, 1,150 of whom work at its headquarters in the Black Forest.
“We no longer need to memorize column names, and joining tables is now just a click away”
Arnold Dieterle, Development Manager
The IT team at VEGA wanted to further develop the company’s ERP/CRM/PPS system, which has been improved continuously since 1995 and is now used by almost 1,000 users worldwide across various departments. The system solves all of the global commercial management requirements of the company, but database development was slowing the application development process.
VEGA’s internal software development team consists of 12 C# developers working with over 3,500 SQL commands, including a lot of stored procedures. The team used to spend hours writing these scripts in SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) and making small corrections in Visual Studio.
This caused problems, as Arnold Dieterle, Development Manager, explains: “We always had to identify which column names to use for joining tables, which type of columns they were, and what the meaning of a column was.” Not only was this heavily time consuming, but due to the manual processes human error crept in creating errors in code.
The team knew something had to change, so they did some research and found that Redgate had a solution with its SQL Prompt tool.
“We can quickly respond to user requests and implement their requirements, because SQL Prompt offers a fast and safe programming environment.”
Arnold Dieterle, Development Manager
The VEGA team started using SQL Prompt to take advantage of its AutoComplete feature, but soon found that it offered significantly more value beyond that core SQL auto-completion functionality. As Arnold outlines: “We learned we could add our own code snippets to a customizable snippets library and share them across the team for even faster coding, We no longer need to memorize column names, and joining tables is now just a click away thanks to the Tab functionality.”
For Arnold and the team at VEGA, saving time writing SQL and responding to user requests faster and safely were the key benefits of implementing SQL Prompt. It not only enabled the VEGA team to write scripts much faster, there were also fewer errors. “It’s a massive time-saver, its intuitive behavior – such as the support provided by drop-down lists, suggestions for linking with JOINS, and meaningful tooltips – makes it really easy to use.”
SQL Prompt also helped the team improve its Scrum process: “We can quickly respond to user requests and implement their requirements, because SQL Prompt offers a fast and safe programming environment.”
As Arnold Dieterle concludes; “We knew the investment made sense and we were going to recover the cost fast. In retrospect, we were right. The best proof is that all the developers love SQL Prompt and use it on a daily basis. It’s become a standard part of our development process.” For the VEGA team, the benefits of SQL Prompt have been so valuable, they are now looking to expand and invest in the full suite of tools within Redgate’s SQL Toolbelt Essentials.
