SQL Storage Compress shrinks the amount of space used by live SQL Server databases. Average compression is 73%, but up to 90% is possible. Databases compressed with SQL Storage Compress are fully functional. SQL Server won't even notice the difference between the compressed and uncompressed version of your database. Transactional consistency, durability, and fault tolerance are all maintained.
How does SQL Storage Compress work?
To create a compressed database, simply use SQL Storage Compress’ wizard or your own T-SQL scripts to create up-to-date backups, then restore them to compressed files using the mdfx and ndfx file extensions. Following the restore you are free to drop the backup. Native SQL Server, SQL Backup Pro, SQL HyperBac backups, and other third-party tools' backups are all supported.
HyperBac Technology
SQL Storage Compress is powered by HyperBac technology, an industry-proven compression and encryption technology for SQL Server, which uses a Windows service to intercept SQL Server's read/write requests to the file system. Following the initial restore, SQL Storage Compress compresses and decompresses the file stream as required.
