Working at Red Gate
Great jobs for great people

User Experience Specialist
Would you get a kick out of working for a company that sees UX as its main competitive advantage? A company whose guiding principle is "Ingeniously simple tools"? A company where everyone understands the importance of creating a great UX and actively helps to make it happen?
Welcome to Red Gate.
Joining Red Gate's UX team could feel a little weird at first. We're not constantly having to justify our role, developers and testers listen to our input, and we get an equal say in whether a product is fit for release. In fact, you might find the drive to improve the UX comes not from the latest round of user tests, but from your teammates wanting to raise the UX to a whole new level of simplicity.
And it's fun. We have the freedom to innovate and we keep process to a minimum – doing what's effective without a burden of specifications and bureaucracy.
And it clearly works. Our users love us and our UX is frequently singled out as why people have chosen a Red Gate tool. It's great to feel valued and have the freedom to do the best work of your life.
What makes you a good fit for the Red Gate UX team?
- You have a deep-seated passion to create great user experiences.
- You have a constant feeling that it's always too complicated and that there's definitely a simpler way.
- You eagerly await results from user testing and you're not afraid to admit that you got it wrong.
- You love getting stuck into difficult technical problems and crafting elegant, simple solutions.
- You can inspire people with your big vision of a great UX.
- You always design 3 alternatives.
- You're best friends with a sharpie, a sketch pad and you've once been accused of having an unhealthy obsession with post-it notes.
What experience should you have?
- You'll have a 2:1 or a 1st in an (ideally) UX related degree although we've previously been pleasantly surprised by people with the right mind-set but who studied non-UX degrees (we already have an architect and an oceanographer on the team!).
- You'll have worked in a UX role and built up a compelling portfolio of awesome work to show us.
- You'll be comfortable with all the tools of the trade you need, be that Photoshop, Balsamiq, Morae, mind-control or whatever.
What would really help?
- You've maybe got a specialism, but you have experience across the whole of the UX process.
- You've got opinions on the latest trends in the UX community.
- You can handle a bit of HTML, CSS, Flash or JavaScript.
What's the package?
- All those lovely Red Gate perks.
- Frequent mingles with the UX community at conferences (wherever they happen to be).
- Working about 40 hours per week, Monday to Friday, with fairly flexible times.
- Salary is negotiable depending upon experience.
What else should you consider?
- Mac or PC, we're flexible, but you'll certainly have a great spec machine.
- We aim to keep you on top of your game, additional training's a given.
