Working at Red Gate
A place to do great work
Community & environment
At Red Gate we have a dedicated group of people committed to helping us to give something back. Here are just a few things that Red Gate does right now to help our community and environment.
Supporting the community
Charitable activity day
Everyone at Red Gate can spend one day a year on a charitable activity of their choice. We think of it as Red Gate donating the unique talents of our employees rather than just writing a cheque. The people we help get to feel good and we get to feel good at Red Gate too.
Fundraising for charities in Cambridge and further afield
There are plenty of opportunities to raise money for charity at Red Gate. We have a dedicated forum for sponsorship requests and we organise a variety of fundraising activities including tea parties, bring and buy sales, and even sponsored moustache growing. Lunch is free at Red Gate so sometimes we raise money with a voluntary pay for your lunch day. We also have a Give as You Earn scheme for those wishing to make donations directly from salary payments.
We've helped many charities including Acorn House at Addenbrookes, the Alzheimer's Research Trust, the British Heart Foundation, Camfed, Children in Need, Comic Relief, Darwin Nurseries, the Haiti earthquake appeal, Jimmy's Night Shelter and the Stroke Association.
Technology and business in the community
Red Gate is proud to support various technology and business activities locally. Every year we award the "Red Gate Prize" to the best computer science student at Cambridge University and every year we talk to 6th form students about the benefits of further education in computer science. We also fund the "Red Gate Software Competition" for the Cambridge University Entrepreneurs. Red Gate is actively involved with the Cambridge Network, The Learning Collaboration and the Cambridge Business Lectures. We also open our doors to local technology startup companies who need a helping hand with office space.
Red Gate has recycling bins dotted all around the offices and kitchens so we only throw away what we need to. We recycle all plastic bottles, Tetra-Pak cartons, paper, cardboard, cans and batteries.
Our printers are duplex helping us to save paper. Any paper that we do use is recycled but we're a pretty techy bunch so we're a fairly paperless office.
Our motion sensitive office lights automatically switch off when they're not needed. We've always encouraged everyone to switch off their PCs when they're not in use but we balance this with enabling people to work from home from time to time using a VPN connection. A group of Red Gaters recently got together to develop Wake on LAN capability for our PCs so we can save energy.
