New Red Gate Toolkit makes it simple to create programs that compare & synch SQL databases
CAMBRIDGE, England, 1 December 2003 – Red Gate Software has released a new Toolkit that makes it simple to create automated programs for comparing and synchronizing Microsoft SQL Server databases.
Version 3 of the SQL Comparison and Synchronization Toolkit has been rewritten for .NET. It gives software developers and DBAs access to the APIs in Red Gate's new SQL Compare 3.1 and Data Compare 3.3 tools. At $890, the software development kit (SDK) costs less than one-third the price of the previous version.
"We've made it simple, fast and inexpensive to implement code that automates database comparison and synchronization within existing or new applications," says Neil Davidson, Red Gate Software's Technical Director.
The SQL Comparison and Synchronization Toolkit enables developers and DBAs to do the following:
- Automate routine comparison and synchronization tasks to occur at selected times without human intervention.
- Use Red Gate's SQL comparison and synchronization software engines to install and maintain programs for customers.
- Replicate databases and verify replications without redesigning databases.
- Automate database migration within the development environment.
New speed and design
SQL Toolkit 3 takes advantage of the new engine in SQL Compare 3.1, the latest version of the company's comparison and synchronization tool for SQL Server database structures. Benchmark tests have shown that SQL Compare 3 is as much as 100 times faster than its predecessor. The speed increases are evident to Seth Rothman, a product manager for a CRM product used by 45 of the world's largest financial institutions.
"The performance of the new version is truly astonishing," says Rothman. "What would have taken 5 to 10 minutes previously, now takes 15 seconds."
Red Gate has also revamped the Toolkit's design, approach and technology. The new version simplifies the development process and provides help files with a full object model, sample applications, code samples, and a clear explanation of how the program can be used.
Verifying customer databases
Rothman currently uses SQL Compare and SQL Data Compare in his everyday work and is looking forward to using the Toolkit to implement a new application for verifying customer databases.
"We keep a copy of every build of our product stored on a backup SQL box that we use to compare against when we release each new build," Rothman explains. "Our plan is to create a .NET app to generate snapshots of each build (and store them in Visual SourceSafe) so we can do this sanity check prior to releasing a new build. We will also send customers a client-version of the app so they can verify that their databases are properly synched at all times. We don't own the client databases so they sometimes change without our knowledge. The Toolkit will help guarantee that our scripts will run successfully."
Free trial version available
A 14-day, supported free trial of the new Toolkit is available on the Red Gate Software website (www.red-gate.com), which also includes a video demonstration of the product. A free trial version of the Toolkit is also available within Red Gate's SQL Bundle 3.1 or above.
SQL Toolkit V3 is $890. A new SQL Bundle Developer Edition 3.1 – containing the new Toolkit and the latest versions of SQL Compare 3.1, SQL Data Compare 3.3 and DTS Compare 1.5 – is $990. All Red Gate products can be purchased on the company's website.
