Red Gate wins "Oscar of software development"

Jolt awards recognize ascendance of database refactoring

CAMBRIDGE, U.K., April 2, 2007 - Red Gate Software has won a Jolt award for SQL Refactor, a $195 software tool that provides database refactoring for the first time in SQL Server.

The Jolt award, sponsored by Dr. Dobb's Journal, is the most coveted prize in the software development industry. Red Gate's SQL Refactor was selected as a productivity winner in the Database Engines and Data Tools category.

The Jolt 2007 judges -- recognized gurus, pathfinders and pulse-takers of the software development industry -- appear to be joining database professionals in considering refactoring a key to greater productivity. In addition to the award for Red Gate's SQL Refactor, judges selected the only book on the subject, Refactoring Databases by Scott W. Ambler and P.J. Sadalage, as a productivity winner in the Books Technical category.

Red Gate released SQL Refactor last October to enable database professionals to improve their database designs without altering functionality. It takes an instant to perform tasks -- including formatting SQL, summarizing scripts, and splitting tables -- that were either impossible or took hours of tedious work in the past.  Users have called SQL Refactor "indispensable" and "simply awesome".

"The Jolt awards are considered the Oscars of our industry," says Neil Davidson, Red Gate's joint-CEO. "At past Jolt ceremonies, we felt a bit like Peter O'Toole at the Academy Awards: frequently nominated but never a winner. It's good to get the recognition, and in the Oscar tradition I give thanks and credit to the Red Gate developers, testers, usability experts, technical authors, support staff, and loyal customers who made it possible."

"Fantastically popular"

Red Gate designed SQL Refactor as an essential tool that SQL Server professionals will use every day.

"We did a lot of research into exactly which database refactorings are 'must have' functions for database professionals," says Andras Belokosztolszki, the Architect of SQL Refactor. "It turns out that being able to reformat SQL code to a preset standard is fantastically popular. That essential feedback led us to build another two dozen customizable formatting options into the application."
