ANTS Profiler version 1.2 adds support for Visual Studio .NET 2003 and .NET Framework 1.1
Simple $295 software profiles applications for any .NET language
CAMBRIDGE, England, May 6, 2003 – Red Gate Software has released a new version of their ANTS Profiler that enables developers to understand code problems for applications written in any of the languages supported by the .NET Framework version 1.1. ANTS Profiler V1.2, available for $295, also includes a new VB and C# code parser for faster display of code profiling results.
A free, fully functional, trial version of ANTS Profiler V1.2 can be downloaded from the Red Gate website. The site also provides a video demonstration of the product in action.
According to Red Gate, the following attributes differentiate ANTS Profiler V1.2 from other profiler products on the market:
- Its $295 price is hundreds of dollars below that of most code profilers.
- It profiles both .NET Windows and web applications, and supports the .NET Framework 1.1 and Visual Studio .NET 2003.
- It's simple and fast – developers can get useful results five minutes after downloading it.
- It profiles applications written in any of the 30 or 40 languages supported by the .NET Framework.
"ANTS Profiler is an asset to any developer's toolset," says Prashant Sridharan, lead product manager for Microsoft's Developer and Platform Evangelism Division. "The ability to pinpoint weak links in code quickly and reliably helps developers build better applications."
Understanding Coding Behavior
ANTS Profiler helps developers understand the behavior of complex code and the trade-offs that determine how it performs.
"You can't optimize your code until you understand how it's working," says Neil Davidson, Red Gate's Director of Technology. "Since its release two months ago, 1,000 people have downloaded trial copies of ANTS Profiler. Its success is due to the fact that it is simple to use and allows developers to produce better code in a shorter space of time."
ANTS Profiler helps developers identify and answer key performance questions such as: What are the performance overheads of floating-point vs. integer arithmetic, and does it really matter with today's fast processors? Does the problem stem from allocating thousands of items on the managed heap? Is the serialization of your class to disk taking the time, or is it the painting to the screen?
Understanding goes beyond just speed, according to Eric Edelstein, senior developer and managing partner at PlanGen, which used ANTS Profiler to reduce response time for an online proposal generator and storage system for the insurance industry.
"Even if there's no perceived resource or speed problem," says Edelstein, "code can be optimized, costs can be lowered, and performance can be improved."
Integral to application development
As response time and information retrieval become defining factors for web application success, more developers are integrating code profiling into their processes. Epitomy, a provider of database management services, used ANTS Profiler to identify problematic code within an online parts catalog for the U.K.'s leading supplier of after-market auto parts.
"ANTS Profiler is an important tool for .NET developers to have during development and testing," says Andrew Vernon, Epitomy's director. "We wouldn't want to do without it."
