Red Gate releases ANTS Profiler 2.0

New version features memory profiler, customizable interface

CAMBRIDGE, England, 17 November 2004 – Red Gate Software has released ANTS Profiler 2.0, an update of their simple software tool that pinpoints slow code in .NET applications within five minutes. The latest release includes a new memory profiler, a redesigned user interface that enables increased customization, and greater performance while using fewer system resources.

The memory profiling tool tracks memory managed by .NET's Common Language Runtime (CLR), breaking usage up into different objects and identifying each by name, size and location. Snapshots of memory usage enable users to easily detect memory leaks.

Chris Crabtree of InfoSquire had the chance to test ANTS Profiler 2.0 against process-intensive, multi-threaded applications, one of which downloads and parses dozens of web pages simultaneously.

"The memory profiler was intuitive and easy to understand, and the stack-trace and source code helpful for keeping track of objects," Crabtree says. "The added ability to snapshot the performance profiling makes the process so much simpler. I can take multiple performance snapshots during program execution without stopping the process to view the results."

Results from ANTS Profiler 2.0 can be exported to either HTML or XML for viewing in other applications.

New interface, greater performance

ANTS Profiler 2.0 has a new graphics interface that can be tailored according to user preference. Users are able to choose, for example, what results to display and how to group them.

New code in ANTS Profiler 2.0 has been optimized to provide greater performance and use fewer system resources, even when dealing with complex, enterprise-wide applications. ANTS Profiler 2.0 returns a snapshot in less than 15 seconds for a typical application allocating 1 million objects; an equivalent operation takes five minutes or more on other profilers.

"Application problems are normally caused by poor performing code, memory leaks and unexpected memory usage," says Neil Davidson, Red Gate Software's Technical Director. "ANTS Profiler 2.0 quickly finds and fixes these problems for applications of any size."

ANTS Profiler 2.0 is available for $295 on the Red Gate website. A free, fully functional and supported trial version, and a PowerPoint presentation are also available on the site.
