New software from Red Gate packages SQL Server databases as executables

CAMBRIDGE, England, 28 June 2004 – Red Gate Software has released SQL Packager, a new program that packages SQL Server databases as executables.

SQL Packager provides a solution to a common problem: packaging and deploying new or updated databases locally or at remote sites. It is written in Visual Studio .NET and runs on the .NET framework.

SQL Packager guides users through four basic steps:

  • Deciding on the schema and data to be packaged
  • Scripting schema and data to preserve dependencies
  • Packaging as an executable or as a .NET project
  • Creating a utility for easy installation by administrators or customers

"For the first time, you can easily package a SQL Server database as an executable and it will work as advertised," says Simon Galbraith, Red Gate's Director of Marketing. "Until now, the process required hand coding; imprecise back-up, restoring and clean-up procedures; or using installer tools that don't script objects in the right order."

SQL Packager relies on the software engines in Red Gate's SQL Compare and SQL Data Compare products, used by 100,000 DBAs and developers worldwide. The large installed base of these and other Red Gate database products enabled the company to do extensive beta testing to ensure the stability of SQL Packager.

"I think it's great how it packages the changes into a single, executable file and lets you specify the target database when running that EXE," says J. Ambrose Little, an ASP.NET MVP, ASPInsider and web architect at GTE Federal Credit Union in Tampa, Fla. "It's super-easy and should save us about 30 minutes in clean-up every time we install a new or updated database."

James Burns, a Microsoft Associate Expert and DBA with a UK-based charitable organization, is using the new software to package updates to database structures and data in a small, compact executable file.

"This executable file can then be run against any of our SQL Servers to bring them up to date in one simple step" says Burns.
