Welcome to the first of our popular SQL in the City Streamed events in 2019.
The theme for the first SQL in the City Streamed event of 2019 was a topical one – standardizing database change management across your organization. If different teams work in different ways, perhaps using their own tools and processes, inefficiencies creep in. Errors occur as changes move from development through testing to staging and production. Think collaboration, automation, tool and process standardization, and it’s a different story. Workflows are streamlined, errors are minimized, and real value starts being delivered to the business.
Microsoft MVPs, Kathi Kellenberger (Editor of Simple Talk), Grant Fritchey (ScaryDBA.com), Steve Jones (Editor of SQLServerCentral) and Kendra Little (Founder of SQL Workbooks) head up the speaker line-up, joined by members of the team at Redgate.
The schedule includes sessions designed to broaden your skillset, support your ongoing learning, and keep you up-to-date with what’s new in the industry and at Redgate.

2:00PM | Opening Keynote: Why DBAs and Developers Must Redefine 'Change Management' Kendra Little, Microsoft Data Platform MVP and Advocate at Redgate Database administrators and IT-minded developers traditionally think of 'Change Management' as a part of the IT Infrastructure Libraries (ITIL) Framework – a bureaucratic approach to managing technical changes which requires assessment and approval for changes near the end of the software development lifecycle (SDLC) for that change. But these days, the meaning of the term 'Change Management' itself has been transformed: the term now refers to a set of approaches that help individuals and teams manage all manner of changes inside their organizations – including the critical change of shifting risk assessment and change approval to earlier stages in the SDLC. In this 15 minute talk, Microsoft MVP Kendra Little will share why this mindset shift in redefining change management is critical to the evolving roles of developers and DBAs. |
2:15PM | Getting Team Collaboration: The Culture Shift Steve Jones, Microsoft Data Platform MVP and Editor at SQLServerCentral.com One of the hardest parts of adopting a Database DevOps process is the need to work together and generate synergies during development. This 40 minute session examines how different tools and techniques support a cultural change to a more collaborative process. |
2:55PM | Top 10 SQL Toolbelt Tips to Standardize and Automate Database Changes Tom Austin, Head of Pre-Sales Engineering (ROW) at Redgate, and Arneh Eskandari, Head of Pre-Sales Engineering (AMER) at Redgate The SQL Toolbelt includes all the components that enable Database DevOps. Join Tom and Arneh as they share their top tips for using the SQL Toolbelt to optimize your database development processes. Whether you're trying to decide how to set things up to implement new workflows, or you’re looking for ways to improve your existing workflows, Tom and Arneh can help. Find out how to save time during database development, reduce the risk of error, ensure your databases are compliance ready, have more confidence when deploying to your target environments, analyze the impact of database changes, and monitor or document those environments. |

3:45PM | The Value of Monitoring at BMW Tony Maddonna, Microsoft Platform Lead & SQL Server Enterprise Architect at BMW, and James King, Enterprise Account Manager at Redgate With 100s of servers spanning multiple continents, BMW needed a way to efficiently monitor their large and growing estate. In this session, Redgate's James King speaks with Tony Maddonna, Microsoft Platform Lead and SQL Server Enterprise Architect at BMW, about how the company identified their monitoring need, the process they took to implement it, and the results they are now seeing. |
4:15PM | Environment Provisioning: The Third Age Grant Fritchey, Microsoft Data Platform MVP and Advocate at Redgate First, we were hunters. Creating and refreshing environments for dev/test/UAT by "hitting it 'til it works". Running a restore job using the SSMS wizard. Then running it again from T-SQL after adding the That was the first age of environment provisioning. Some of us moved onto rubbing sticks together; putting the script into a SQL agent job, scripting out the permissions, and sticking our sledgehammer masking techniques in as a job step. We gathered up our jobs, which often failed and took too long, but that was the way things were. Nobody had told us about the schema change, or the tiny diskspace we were trying to land in. We were pleased to be hunter-gatherers. In this session, we discover the third age of environment provisioners. The farmers. Developers, analysts, and others can self-serve, through repeatable and audited processes. In today's age, masking desensitizes environments to mitigate against breaches and ensure compliance, while enabling developers and testers to work with realistic data. Whole environments are delivered at scale with databases customized to their specific security needs. Learn how you can join the farmers! |
5:15PM | What's New in Product Development at Redgate Redgaters from across our product teams A look at what's new in our ingeniously simple products with some of the Redgaters who create them. |

5:50PM | Panel Discussion: Database Development Disasters Data Platform MVPs Kathi Kellenberger, Steve Jones, Grant Fritchey, and Kendra Little We asked the Redgate community to tell us a true story in 500 words or less about a time when they were involved in an Agile or DevOps project that went full steam ahead in speeding up delivery of application code, but didn't modernize database development practices. Join Data Platform MVPs Kathi Kellenberger, Steve Jones, Grant Fritchey, and Kendra Little as they talk through the best submissions and reveal the winners of the contest. This is a great session for any database professional who's on the hunt for real-world evidence for why the database should not be an afterthought. |
6:30PM | Getting Consistent Builds: Fixing Cross-Database Dependencies Kendra Little, Microsoft Data Platform MVP and Advocate at Redgate Building database code is critical to Database DevOps: automated builds ensure that you can reliably recreate your schema from source control in a standardized fashion. But building database code is often tricky due to cross-database dependencies. In this demo packed session, you will learn:
You'll also get to see Microsoft's new Notebooks feature in action in Azure Data Studio as we script and test our way to a successful build. |
