{"id":2737,"date":"2008-12-08T10:10:00","date_gmt":"2008-12-08T10:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test.simple-talk.com\/uncategorized\/scrum-keeping-kosher-doesnt-make-you-jewish\/"},"modified":"2016-07-28T10:49:29","modified_gmt":"2016-07-28T10:49:29","slug":"scrum-keeping-kosher-doesnt-make-you-jewish","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.red-gate.com\/simple-talk\/blogs\/scrum-keeping-kosher-doesnt-make-you-jewish\/","title":{"rendered":"Scrum: Keeping Kosher doesn&#039;t make you Jewish"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Our development team has started using Scrum.&#160; We&#8217;re only 4 weeks in, so it would be premature to make a judgement on whether it&#8217;s working for us.&#160; I&#8217;ve investigated how it&#8217;s practised elsewhere, and there seems to be a worrying trend&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Let&#8217;s say I want to become a Christian.&#160; I could go to church on Sundays; receive communion; marry in a Church; sing hymns; celebrate Christmas.&#160; But none of these would make me a Christian.&#160; These are just extrinsic procedures &#8211; not core beliefs.&#160; To really be a Christian, you have to &#8216;live-for-God&#8217;; believe in the divinity of Christ; and so on.&#160; The point of Christianity is these core beliefs, not the extraneous rituals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">When it comes to Scrum, I always see teams faithfully having daily stand-up meetings, having retrospective meetings, calling someone a Scrummaster, etc.&#160; But they fail to implement the core principles of Scrum: &#8216;Done-is-done&#8217;, etc.&#160; It&#8217;s easy to practise the irrelevant rituals, yet these should not be confused with what Scrum is really about.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Many people tell me that no one implements Scrum properly &#8211; it&#8217;s a matter of compromise and seeing what works.&#160; I don&#8217;t accept this.&#160; It&#8217;s remarkable how readily people compromise on the core-beliefs, yet retain all the extraneous procedures.&#160; They give up believing Jesus is the son of God, but keep Easter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><b>&#160;<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">This is not to say there isn&#8217;t value in some of Scrum.&#160; Daily stand-up meetings are useful; but this hardly amounts to a vindication of Scrum.&#160; In the same way, some hymns are great (&#8216;Autumn Days&#8217; and &#8216;Shine Jesus Shine&#8217; are two of my favourites) but this is not sufficient to justify becoming a Christian.&#160;&#160; If you like hymns but don&#8217;t believe in the divinity of Christ, then don&#8217;t become a Christian.&#160;&#160; Start a choir instead.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Our development team has started using Scrum.&#160; We&#8217;re only 4 weeks in, so it would be premature to make a judgement on whether it&#8217;s working for us.&#160; I&#8217;ve investigated how it&#8217;s practised elsewhere, and there seems to be a worrying trend&#8230; Let&#8217;s say I want to become a Christian.&#160; I could go to church on&#8230;&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":95472,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2],"tags":[],"coauthors":[],"class_list":["post-2737","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-blogs"],"acf":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.red-gate.com\/simple-talk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2737","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.red-gate.com\/simple-talk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.red-gate.com\/simple-talk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.red-gate.com\/simple-talk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/95472"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.red-gate.com\/simple-talk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2737"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.red-gate.com\/simple-talk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2737\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":41710,"href":"https:\/\/www.red-gate.com\/simple-talk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2737\/revisions\/41710"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.red-gate.com\/simple-talk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2737"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.red-gate.com\/simple-talk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2737"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.red-gate.com\/simple-talk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2737"},{"taxonomy":"author","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.red-gate.com\/simple-talk\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/coauthors?post=2737"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
