{"id":2341,"date":"2006-07-26T02:24:00","date_gmt":"2006-07-26T02:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test.simple-talk.com\/uncategorized\/prefixing-database-tables\/"},"modified":"2016-07-28T10:48:52","modified_gmt":"2016-07-28T10:48:52","slug":"prefixing-database-tables","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.red-gate.com\/simple-talk\/blogs\/prefixing-database-tables\/","title":{"rendered":"Prefixing Database Tables"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewing a database with 400 tables is no easy task, especially when you didn&#8217;t make the database.&#160; It seems like it would make everyone&#8217;s life easier is if people would prefix their database tables in a way that helps group tables logically.<\/p>\n<p>For example, there are tables in this 400 table database specifically used for configuring the application.&#160; It would be nice if they were prefixed with &#8220;config_&#8221; to denote that they are configuration tables.&#160; Instead of tables <strong>A<\/strong>, <strong>M<\/strong>,&#160;and <strong>Z<\/strong> intermingled with the rest of the tables in the database, they would be nicely grouped together as <strong>config_A<\/strong>, <strong>config_M<\/strong>, and <strong>config_Z<\/strong>.&#160; <\/p>\n<p>But even if everyone were to start prefixing their databases the way I want right now, it wouldn&#8217;t help me out with the one I&#8217;ve already got.&#160;&#160;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anthology_of_Interest_I\">A man can dream, though &#8230; a man can dream<\/a>. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reviewing a database with 400 tables is no easy task, especially when you didn&#8217;t make the database.&#160; It seems like it would make everyone&#8217;s life easier is if people would prefix their database tables in a way that helps group tables logically.
