When are there product updates?
Periodically, Red Gate Software issues updates for products. For example:
- minor releases
These are issued as free updates.
- major releases
These are issued as a free 14-day trial.
If you have a support and upgrades package, or if you purchased the product in the last 30 days, major releases are free.
Using the Check for Updates service
To use the Check for Updates service, your computer must have a connection to the Internet. If your Internet connection uses a proxy server, ensure your Internet Explorer® connection settings are configured correctly. Note that the Check for Updates service does not work with automatic configuration scripts.
To check for any updates that are available for download:
- On the Help menu of the product, click Check for Updates.
The updates that are available are listed, for example:

To view the full release details in your default Internet browser, click More information.
To get the update:
- click Download and Install.
If there is a minor and a major release available to you, choose the required update by selecting Install this upgrade, and then click Download and Install.
The updates are downloaded and the SQL Toolbelt Installer opens so that you can install the updates. Note that this applies only to SQL Server tools.
Note that the SQL Toolbelt Installer will prompt you to close the program. If you are running SQL Prompt or SQL Refactor, you will also be prompted to close SQL Server Management Studio, Query Analyzer, or Visual Studio®.
About the Check for Updates service
When you start the program, the Check for Updates service informs you automatically when there are updates available, for example:

If you do not want to receive these notifications for the program, clear the Check for updates on startup check box.
If you do not want the Check for Updates service to inform you about a particular update again, select the Don't tell me about this version again check box. Note that the Check for Updates service will still inform you of new updates when they become available.
