Cannot run two database backups at the same time

Category: Troubleshooting & error messages
Date: 10 Jun 2009
Product: SQL Backup
SQL Backup may notify you by email or show an error in the timeline:
VDI Error 1010: Failed to get configuration from the server.
Additionally, a SQL error 3013 may be reported.
Opening the VDI.LOG (normally in the LOG folder of the SQL Server installation) reveals information similar to this:
----------------------------------------------
2007/09/06 23:16:15 pid(1180) tid(3276)
Error on Global\SQLBACKUP_1C573D75-1C28-4731-8DFE-AFC69D0B4A76
Error at SVDS::Open: Open(control) Status Code: 2, x2
Explanation: The system cannot find the file specified.

The cause of this could be a SQL Server native or SQL Backup backup that is running when the second backup job on the same database is started.

Be aware that multiple simultaneous backups of the same SQL Server database can cause conflicts. If other scheduled backups occur at the same time as the SQL Backup scheduled backup, this error sequence will occur repeatedly. Check the SQL Server scheduled jobs and maintenance plans to ensure that conflicts do not exist. Also, if running ad-hoc backups, be aware that this may produce errors in any SQL Backup scheduled jobs if any of those jobs start and attempt to backup the same database at the time your ad-hoc backup is running. To avoid any unnecessary notifications being emailed to server administrators as a result of an ad-hoc backup, it may be a good idea to disable any SQL Backup job until the ad-hoc backup completes.

Finally, use the SQL Backup console's timeline to identify SQL Backup scheduled jobs that may be conflicting with each other. These should be highlighted in red on the timeline in version 5 of SQL Backup's console application.
