Installing or upgrading server components on SQL Server 2012

If you are installing or upgrading the server components on a SQL Server 2012 instance, you are recommended to do so manually using SQBServerSetup.exe. This is because the recommended setup for SQL Server 2012 does not include the permissions necessary to install SQL Backup automatically. When you attempt to install the server components using the GUI, you are prompted to install manually:

Manual installation on a local machine

  1. Set up a Windows account for the SQL Backup Agent service to log on as. The account should have the permissions specified in Security Model, including permission to log on as a service, and read and write permissions to any disk locations that will be backed up or copied to, or restored from.
  2. Click Open with Windows Explorer to find SQBServerSetup.exe and run it on the local machine; the SQL Backup (server components) Setup Wizard is launched.
  3. Follow the instructions in the wizard. On the Select Service Application Startup Account page, enter the details of the account you created in step 1:

Manual installation on a remote machine

  1. Set up a Windows account for the SQL Backup Agent service to log on as. The account should have the permissions specified in Security Model, including permission to log on as a service, and read and write permissions to any disk locations that will be backed up or copied to, or restored from.
  2. Copy SQBServerSetup.exe to the instance that you are installing on. Click Open with Windows Explorer to locate the file.
  3. Click Launch Remote Desktop Connection and log in to the remote machine. Run SQBServerSetup.exe on the instance; the SQL Backup (server components) Setup Wizard opens.
  4. Follow the instructions in the wizard. On the Select Service Application Startup Account page, enter the details of the account you created in step 1.

Standard installation

Standard installation through the GUI is only recommended if the account the SQL Server instance is using has permission to execute SQBServerSetup.exe. This may be the case if the account is a member of the local Administrators group. For more information on installing using the GUI, see Installing or upgrading server components using the GUI.
