I'm checking out the evaluation version of SQL Source Control, but I don't seem to see any way of getting a previous version without having SQL Compare Pro installed... am I missing something?

If you've done something very simple, you can view and therefore copy and paste it from the history dialog.

However, you're right, at the moment using SQL Compare Pro is currently a requirement to update a database from a source control version.
