RE: SQL Prompt causing VS 2012 crash on exit

I think this same problem is causing SSMS 2012 to crash on exit as well. This is the error I see in the event viewer:

Application: Ssms.exe
Framework Version: v4.0.30319
Description: The process was terminated due to an unhandled exception.
Exception Info: exception code c0020001, exception address 76CD4B32
Stack:

I think it might be related to this issue: http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/336844/static-variable-in-native-method-causes-exception-c0020001-during-process-exit

RE: Deadlock in version 5.3.6.28

This is the first time I have seen a deadlock occur.

I do have those other products installed. I only use the Search application however.

Scanning through the logs, I only see exceptions for not being able to find the PK for a column, perhaps due to it being a table type.

The other errors in the logs are regarding not being able to decrypt system_internals_allocation_units and another regarding having no access to run DBCC TRACEON

I dont' see anything that appears to be related to the deadlock.

RE: New feature candidate: SQL Tab Magic available in BETA

Hi there,

An early access release of SQL Tab Magic is now available to download from http://download.red-gate.com/EAP/SQLTabMagic/SQLTabMagic.zip and includes the following new features and enhancements:
- Support for SQL Server Management Studio 2012.
- Redesign of the user interface.
- Single dialog for searching all tabs.
- Empty tabs are no longer included in tab history nor opened on startup.
- Stability and performance improvements.

This is the last release of SQL Tab Magic as a standalone product. The next early access release will incorporate SQL Tab Magic in SQL Prompt.

We’d love to hear what you think. If you have any feedback, please leave a comment or email eapprompt@red-gate.com

We are aware of a problem whereby all tabs are reopened when you launch SQL Server Management Studio, rather than only the tabs that were open when SQL Server Management Studio was last closed. If you encounter this problem, please email eapprompt@red-gate.com

Many thanks,
Thank you for your forum post.

How often do you encounter this deadlock?

Whilst I have known SQL Prompt to encounter performance issues, I have never known it create SQL Deadlock.

Do you have any other Red Gate products that plug-in to SSMS installed? for example SQL Source Control, SQL Search or SQL Test.

Is there any information in the SQL Prompt logs for the date/time the deadlock appeared? You will find the SQL Prompt log files in this path:

C:\Users\<user_name>\AppData\local\red Gate\SQL Prompt 5

Many Thanks

RE: 5.3.8.2 downloads but no installer appears on Windows-8

I'm leaning more towards a MICROSOFT issue. There are frequent times when, for reasons known ONLY to Microsoft it seems, a window will open BEHIND the active window on whichever of the three displays I'm using.

In this case, SSMS2012 was open on the center display. While waiting for the download to complete, I interacted with pages in Chrome on the left display. Upon completion of the download, the installer window posted to the LEFT display, BEHIND Chrome, but did NOT register an open window on any of the task bars on any of the displays! I only found the "missing installer" when I closed Chrome down because SSDT "lost" the color picker for a report cell BEHIND the main window and there's no way on earth (known to me, at least) to get that dialog front and center! Minimize via Task Manager then Switch-to at least makes SSDT active again - close and reboot is the ONLY solution to the "hiding window issue" with W-8 that I'm aware of.

It would be great if the Red Gate installer forced itself to the front of the same display as the download was visible upon... Any chance of that, please?

Shy of that, I think this can be closed as "dumb Microsoft error", NOT a Red Gate bug...

Deadlock in version 5.3.6.28

Sql Prompt 5.3.6.28 caused a deadlock in a production system.

The lock message from our monitoring sofware was:

The deadlock victim was spid 200 with application name 'Red Gate Software Ltd SQL Prompt 5.3.6.28' by user xxxxxx' on host 'xxxxxx'.

Last command issued:

SELECT name, schema_id AS id FROM [tempdb].[sys].schemas; SELECT o.schema_id AS owner, o.name, o.type, o.object_id AS id, o.parent_object_id AS parent,
CONVERT(BIT, ( CASE WHEN o.is_ms_shipped = 1 THEN 1
WHEN x.major_id IS NOT NULL THEN 1
ELSE 0 END )) AS sysobj
FROM [tempdb].sys.objects o
LEFT JOIN [tempdb].sys.extended_properties x ON o.object_id = x.major_id
AND x.minor_id = 0 AND x.class = 1
AND x.name = N'microsoft_database_tools_support'
WHERE   type != 'PK' AND type != 'TR' AND schema_id!=4;
SELECT object_id AS id, parent_id AS owner, name FROM [tempdb].[sys].triggers; SELECT user_type_id AS id, name, schema_id AS owner, system_type_id as systype, is_table_type FROM [tempdb].[sys].types;

SELECT name, id AS owner, xusertype, colid, CONVERT(BIT, (colstat & 1)) AS is_identity, CONVERT(BIT, (colstat & 4)) AS is_computed,

I can't imagine why a deadlock should occur just reading schema information.

RE: SQL Prompt capitalizes XML functions

Hi Eddie,

I had "Build-in functions" set to "Leave as is", but that didn't resolve the issue.

Now I also set "Build-in data types" to "Leave as is" (which doesn't make sence, since xml functions are not data types) but even that didn't resolved the issue.

Hi
Thank you for your forum post.

By default SQL Prompt will UPPERCASE, 'reserved keywords', 'Built-in functions' and 'built-in data types'

Try editing the SQL Prompt options ->Format ->Case and modify the 'select the case to use for:' for each option 'reserved keywords', 'Built-in functions' and 'built-in data types' using the dropdown to 'Leave as is'.

Many Thanks

I'm used to having the download portion lock SSMS while it completes, then the installer fires up and requires SSMS be closed out.

I see the download progressing, disappearing, then... NOTHING!

Just to be sure I tried it twice, having closed SSMS2012 in the meantime. Same result.

Downloading it manually!

Bug?

SQL Prompt causing VS 2012 crash on exit

Since installing the newest version of SQL Prompt 5.3.8.2 the other day, I noticed that Visual Studio 2012 now crashes on exit every single time. Windows will then pop up a window offering me a solution to the problem - with the recommended solution being to install an update to SQL Prompt, but the update they tell me to install the same as what I already have installed.

Hello, I recently started to use "SQL Prompt 5" for my SQL development and came across this issue.

We have a lot of xml manipulation done in the stored procedures in our system and when I type one of SQL xml functions "SQL Propmpt" capitalize them which makes function invalid, because they are case-sensitive.

DECLARE @EntityXml XML = '<Root><Child/></Root>'

@EntityXml.QUERY('/Root/Child')  is invalid.

Unfortunately there is no way to undo formatting. Every time i hit space of period the function gets capitalized and even when I hit "Esc" after that formatting are not reverted and function stays CAPITALIZED, creating "catch 22" situation. I need to go back and retype the function and as soon as I hit any other key it gets capitalized.
The only way out I found is to type my functions intentionally type wrong function name (usually with extra character at the end like "valuee" and then get back and fix it.

I went through options and could find a way to disable this capitalization.

Can someone advise on any solution. It's very annoying and frustrating.

Thank you
