SQL Packager - Cancelling an executable?

Is there anyway I can cancel the executable running a package if a value in the DB is set?

I see there is /presql however I don't know if I can cancel running the rest of the executable, is this possible?

RE: click once?

Hi,

Here is my experience with ClickOnce and Packager. I output the package as a C# project so that I could use the "publish" menu item from Visual Studio, a fair shade easier than actually working out how ClickOnce actually works! After I published, I tried the "install" button on the website where I had published it. At that point it told me I needed RedGate.Compression.Zlib.dll in my GAC, so I did that.

Next I clicked Install again, and got the flashing command prompt, same as you.

I then went back into Visual Studio and edited PackageMain.Main() to put a Console.ReadLine right before "return". Now I can see what is in the command window and it says

Quote:

You don't have sufficient permissions to run an executable located on another machine

My guess is that in all likelyhood it's a matter of adjusting your zone security in the .NET Framework configuration wizard to allow assemblies to run across the Internet. Maybe there is another way around this issue, but at least you can find out what the problem might be.

I hope this helps!

Hi,

Were you able to try out Michelle's suggestions and exclude the users and logins in the end? We’ve just released a version of SQL Packager 6 that allows you to edit a script before packaging, which may help.
See http://www.red-gate.com/MessageBoard/viewtopic.php?t=7743

Kind regards,

SQL Packager 6.0 has been released

SQL Packager 6.0 has been released and is now available for download. This release enables two much requested features:

•	packaging of externally generated SQL scripts into exe’s or C# projects
•	the ability to edit the SQL script generated by SQL Packager before it is deployed

RE: C# packager issues

#7

when editing the package templates (SQL Packager 5\SQL Packager Code Templates), you cannot open the designer for MessageBox.cs. Error says "The variable 'messageBoxIcon1' is either undeclared or was never assigned. "

#8

if you encounter a SQL error when building a new database (e.g. a database the same name already exists, etc.) the application attempts a catch and then blows up at PackageExecutor.cs, Execute() at "throw;":

public void Execute()
{
try
{
OnStatus(new ProgressStatusEventArgs("Connecting To Database", 0));
ConnectToDatabase(); //Connect to database
ExecutePackage();
}
catch	//If any exception then potentially delete the database if I made it///
{
DeleteDatabaseIfMade();
throw;
}
click once?

When we do a "click once" publish of our C# packager and try to run it, the user will briefly see the cmd prompt flash, and then the application just disappears - no form ever appears on the screen.

To get it working this far we had to set the RedGate dll's "copy local" to true, is there anything else we're missing?

C# packager issues

I noticed a few annoyances in the C# packager.

#1

In FormAbout, linkLabel1_LinkClicked, if you change the hypertext to point to "yourcompany.com", you must also change this:

string text2LookFor = "yourcompany.com"

if you don't, the click area will start at -1 because it's assumed that the "text to look for" is always found.

#2

... then at run time you get a very weird error in packagemain.cs, showmsg:

if(m_ConsoleMode) //Console
{
Console.WriteLine("\n\n"+msgTypeText);
Console.Write(message + "\r\n");

because the error is in the coding (string text2lookfor is never found), m_ConsoleMode is not properly initialized, the application thinks its running in console mode, and it throws an IOException.

#3

When you first open PackageExecutor.cs in VS, you'll receive an error stating that the line endings are inconsistent, and VS prompts you to convert all line endings to CR LF.

#4

In FormSelectDatabase, textBoxInformation, the Text property reads:

"This executable will upgrade an existing database or create a new database. Please choose the server and database you would like to upgrade or create."

Changing it in the text box's properties does little good however, unless you deal with this:

if(this.radioButtonUpgradeDatabase.Checked)
this.textBoxInformation.Text = "This executable will upgrade an existing database. Please choose the server and database you would like to upgrade.";
else
this.textBoxInformation.Text = "This executable will create a new database. Please choose the server and database you would like to create.";

(You never see the text that displays from the textBox's properties, in other words, because it's always overwritten by one or the other of these nearly identical variants).

Not strictly C# issues:

# 5

if you include users in your package and you choose to "upgrade an existing database", the package will error because the users already exist.

# 6

the database settings are not available in the packager: specifically we need to be able to "SET trustworthy ON" during database creation.

Hi,

I believe you are looking for the "add WITH ENCRYPTION option to stored procedures, etc" item in SQL Packager's Schema options. That will insert "WITH ENCRYPTION" to anything that can be encrypted.

encrypted sprocs

Would it be possible (current version or future version) to allow for encryption of sprocs/functions/etc at time of build?

that way the developer can work from a non-encrypted database, but release an encrypted one.

or is there an easy way to do this I'm not thinking of?

RE: Package names

The executable package name has to be a valid identifier in C# - so no whitespace, and only letters, numbers and underscores allowed. We've tried to lift as many restrictions as possible on the name in 6.0, but it will still have to obey the rules for C# identifiers for now.

Package names

Is there any particular reason why the .NET Executable package name should be limited to alpha characters (ie no whitespaces or numbers)?
I would prefer to be able to prefix the package name with the date eg:

2008 09 16 Packagname

but this is currently not possible.
