New SQL Doc™ from Red Gate removes tedium from database documentation
"Embarrassingly easy to use!" says Microsoft MVP
CAMBRIDGE, U.K., December 1, 2006 – Red Gate Software has released a new tool called SQL Doc that transforms the hours-long task of database documentation into a simple point-and-click procedure that can be finished in less than a minute. SQL Doc is available for $295 on its own, or as one of 10 tools in the SQL Professional Toolbelt.
SQL Doc enables users to quickly access database overviews, including schema and dependencies, and select which databases or sections of databases they want to document, right down to object level. It is able to document one or more SQL Server 2000 and 2005 databases, and export documentation in HTML with or without frames.
"Database documentation is a bit like flossing – we know we should do it, but we often don't because it's so tedious," says Simon Galbraith, joint CEO of Red Gate. "While Red Gate can't help with daily dental care, we definitely know something about easing a DBA's pain. With SQL Doc, in just a few mouse clicks you can easily document entire database schema, saving hours of time and stress."
Beta testing of SQL Doc has generated widespread praise among the SQL Server DBA community.
"This is it," says Doug Shontz, Senior Database Administrator for AdvancED*. "I just uninstalled all the other test installs for every other documenter I have tried. This one wins hands down. When we looked at this, three DBAs had the same reaction – dead silence – and then words of awed exclamation."
"This tool is embarrassingly easy to use," says David Hayden, an ASP.NET, C#, SQL Server Developer and Microsoft MVP. "I have used it both from the command line in my nightly builds and via the GUI interface. One of the cool things it does is allow you to edit the Description Extended Property of Table Columns right within the GUI tool itself. Just click on the edit icon to enter a description and it adds the comment to the documentation and to the database.
A fully functional version of SQL Doc is available as a 14-day free trial download and for direct purchase from the Red Gate website.
