SqlNullValueException occurring in synchronization wizard

Category: Troubleshooting & error messages
Date: 18 Nov 2008
Product: SQL Data Compare
Versions: 6.0
Fix Version: 6.1

After comparing the data of two databases using SQL Data Compare, clicking the synchronization wizard, choosing the synchronization direction, and clicking next may cause the following error to appear:

System.Data.SqlTypes.SqlNullValueException

This can happen if the destination SQL Server that you are synchronizing to has the SQL Backup software installed incorrectly or it is installed correctly but malfunctioning. SQL Data Compare checks for the presence of the Red Gate SQL Backup software so that it can offer the opportunity for you to back up your database before synchronizing it. If SQL Backup's SQBUTILITY extended stored procedure returns NULL valued data in certain fields of the result of SQL Data Compare's query, this exception can occur.

For instance, installing SQL Backup on a SQL Server 2000 without applying SQL Server Service Pack 3 or higher, a platform that is not supported by SQL Backup, will cause this error to occur.

This situation will be handled more gracefully in SQL Data Compare 6.1 so that a failure to collect data about the SQL Backup installation will not affect Data Compare except to restrict the backup before synchronization to only offer native SQL Server backups.
