Exception when connecting to SQL Server (Version 6)

Category: Troubleshooting & error messages
Date: 10 Jun 2009
Product: SQL Compare
Versions: 6
Fix Version: 7

When upgrading from SQL Compare 5.x to 6.0 you may be unable to connect to your SQL Server(s)

There is a known issue where using a port other than the default (1433) to connect to your SQL Server can cause SQL Compare 6 to report a connection error while SQL Compare 5.x will connect without a problem. To resolve this issue, explicitly define the port number after the server name in the [Server] box by appending a comma and the TCP port number that the instance of SQL Server service answers on, for example:

SERVERNAME,1234
SERVERNAME\INSTANCENAME,1234
TCP:SERVERNAME\INSTANCENAME,1234
