Project files (scp files) suddenly appear on desktop (version 5)

Category: Troubleshooting & error messages

Versions: 5
Fix Version: 6.0

When editing a comparison project, SQL Compare project files (files with an SCP extention) appear on the desktop.

This occurs when the projects folder or the currently edited project file is marked as read-only. SQL Compare catches the failure to write to the file and generates a new file with a GUID as a file name and saves this to the current user's desktop.

To prevent this, locate the projects folder by right-clicking in the Comparison Projects screen and selecting 'locate on disk'. A Windows Explorer window will open. Right-click the projects folder and ensure that your account appears on the security tab with read/write access. Also, right-click the currently-open project file and make sure that the 'read only' box is not checked on the general tab.

This issue has been addressed in SQL Compare 6 by informing the user that the project file cannot be written to.
