Warning: System error 64 (The specified network name is no longer available) on backing up across a network

Category: Troubleshooting & error messages
Date: 06 Jul 2011
Product: SQL Backup
You may see errors such as these in your SQL Backup logfile:

Error 620: Error writing to backup file(s).
Warning 210: Thread 0 warning:
Warning 210: Error writing to backup file: \\backup200808250814.sqb
Warning: System error 64 (The specified network name is no longer available)

The errors indicate a problem transmitting the data over a network. The most effective remedy we have found is to change the 'SessTimeout' value.

With reference to this document (http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windows2000serv/reskit/regentry/58909.mspx?mfr=true), changing the SessTimeout value has helped some of our users address the 'The specified network name is no longer available' issue. Although the document refers to Windows 2000, it has been found to be effective on Windows 2003 too.
Start with a value of 300 seconds then test with a manual backup. If necessary, increase in increments of 30 seconds.
