"Access to the database file is not allowed" error

Category: Troubleshooting & error messages

Product: SQL Backup
When running SQL Backup, the following error may occur:

SQL Backup error: Failed to open local data store: Access to the database file is not allowed

This error is related to permissions. The SQL Backup Server components installation creates a SQL Server Compact Edition database to be used as a cache for the backup and restore history. This is what SQL backup refers to as the local data store, it is used to improve the performance of the SQL Backup GUI.

By default, SQL Backup creates the local data store in this directory of the SQL Server computer:

%allusersprofile%\Application Data\Red Gate\SQL Backup\Data\<instance>

The database file is called data.sdf. This is the SQL Server Compact edition data file.

To resolve this issue, give security Full Control permissions to the logon account used for the SQL Backup Agent Service and for the logged in user account running the SQL Backup GUI.
