Error locating server or instance of SQL Server

Category: Troubleshooting & error messages
Date: 24 Apr 2009
Product: SQL Backup
When performing a backup or restore operation, the following error may occur:

SQL error -2147467259: Login timeout expired
SQL error -1: SQL Network Interfaces: Error Locating Server/Instance Specified [xFFFFFFFF]

This message could indicate that SQL Backup could not send the backup or restore command to the SQL Server. The following conditions may cause this to happen:

  · DNS lookup failure
    - Refreshing the DNS resolver cache may help in this case, run ipconfig /flushdns from the command line
  · The SQL Server is running on a custom port
    - Ensure that the "SQL Server Browser" service is started on SQL Server 2005 servers
    - Include the port number in the SQL Server box, for instance, when registering a new server on port 1433, enter "MyServer,1433"
