SQL Backup Error 880: permission denied in database

Category: Troubleshooting & error messages
Date: 30 Jan 2009
Product: SQL Backup
While trying to backup a remote SQL Server, the following error may occur when creating and running a scheduled backup job:

Error 880: BACKUP DATABASE permission denied in database: (master)

(Manual backup using the SQL Backup console succeeds without incident)

SQL Backup V.5.0 introduced an extra layer of security, where the account used in the SQL Backup GUI and SQL Backup Agent was checked to see if that had the security rights to perform a backup.

With the release of SQL Backup 5.3 earlier this year, a new registry key can be added that will enable SQL Backup to skip the User Rights Checks.

Ensure that the user account that runs the SQL Backup Agent service has the correct permissions. See

http://www.red-gate.com/supportcenter/Content.aspx?p=SQL%20Backup&c=SQL_Backup%5chelp%5c5.3%5c3960.htm

If the error persists, turn off the user rights checks.

SQL Backup looks for the registry entry SkipChecks (DWORD type) in the instance specific registry node e.g. HKLM\Software\Red Gate\SQL Backup\BackupSettingsGlobal\(LOCAL). If that entry has a value of 1, it skips the backup and restore user rights checks. If the value is 0 or the registry key does not exist, the User Rights checks still occur.

To create a Registry Key called SkipChecks:

1. In the registry node HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Red Gate\SQL Backup\BackupSettingsGlobal\(local) or <Named SQL Instance> create a new DWORD type Registry Key called SkipChecks

2. Set the data value to = 1
3. Stop and restart the SQL Backup Agent Service
4. Configure a scheduled backup or wait for an existing scheduled backup job to trigger
