SMTP mail options not being saved

Category: Troubleshooting & error messages
Date: 08 Jun 2010
Product: SQL Backup
After configuring the SQL Backup SMTP email options for a server, the new settings do not seem to be saved.

The SMTP mail settings are saved to the following registry key on the SQL Server:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Red Gate\SQL Backup\BackSettingsGlobal\<SQL Instance Name>

The user account that runs the SQL Backup Agent service must have permission to the registry. Check whether the SQL Backup Agent Service log on account has permissions to write to the registry on your SQL Server machine.

To check the log on account, go to Windows Services on the SQL Server machine, scroll down to SQL Backup Agent and select Properties>Log On.

When you have confirmed that the SQL Backup Agent user account has permission to read from and write to the registry, check whether the settings specified in the Options ->Email Settings are written into the respective keys:

SMTPHost
SMTPPassword
SMTPPort
SMTPSender
SMTPUserName
