Reseeding a disaster recovery database

Category: How do I?

If you encounter a problem with Log Shipping that can't be resolved, you may be forced to 'reseed' the disaster recovery (DR) database. This effectively means to take a fresh copy of the source database and restore it to the DR server.

You do not need to start the Log Shipping process again from scratch. Reseeding can be accomplished by following the method below:

1. Disable the Log Shipping backup job on the source server
2. Disable the Log Shipping restore job on the DR server
3. Move or delete all transactions log backup files for that database from the log shipping network share location.
4. Take a FULL backup of the source database (seed backup)
5. Copy the seed backup to the DR server
6. Restore the seed WITH NORECOVERY or WITH STANDBY
7. Enable the Log Shipping backup job on the source server
8. Enable the Log Shipping restore job on the DR server
