Unable to edit SQL Backup Scheduled Jobs via the Jobs Tab in the SQL Backup GUI (version 5)

Category: Troubleshooting & error messages
Date: 15 Jul 2009
Product: SQL Backup
Fix Version: 6

When you create a scheduled backup job, the job can normally be modified later in time by locating the Job on the 'Jobs' Tab and right-clicking and selecting the 'Edit' command using the SQL Backup GUI.

However, on some occasions you may find that the 'Edit' command is grayed out or the job is no longer listed on the 'Jobs' tab, although the job continues to run as per the schedule configured.

The above symptoms will be observed if you decide to edit the job using SQL Server Management Studio or Enterprise Manager via SQL Server Agent ->Jobs and make any modifications such as the following:

 - The job is modified to include additional Job Steps before and / or after the Job Step containing the SQL Backup command.

 - The Single SQL Backup Job Step is modified to include additional T-SQL Commands that SQL Backup does not understand, for example DBCC SHRINKDATABASE (AdventureWorks, 0) or other Database Maintenance tasks.

If you wish to still be able to modify the SQL Backup Job using the SQL Backup GUI, you must remove the additional job steps and the T-SQL Commands that SQL Backup does not understand from the job. If you still wish to perform the additional steps and T-SQL commands for performing Database Maintenance, you must create these as separate SQL Server Agent Jobs outside of the SQL Backup GUI.

Please Note: You can still continue to have additional job steps and / or T-SQL Commands in the scheduled SQL Backup Job, but you cannot use the the SQL Backup GUI to edit the job.
