Since SQL Backup shows only backup history for the local SQL Server, some extra considerations are necessary when choosing to restore from a SQL Backup file hosted on a network share on another computer.

Before you start, ensure that the backup file that you want to restore exists on a folder which is shared using Windows Explorer. It's also important to note that the SQL Backup Agent service startup account, which is the Windows account used to run the SQL Backup server component on the SQL Server that you wish to restore to, has read access to the share that you had created for the source backup file.

  · Open the SQL Backup Restore Wizard by clicking the "Restore" button on the toolbar
  · Select "Browse for files to restore" in the dropdown
  · Select the SQL Server that you want to restore to from the "SQL Server" dropdown
  · Click "Add Files" - the file browser opens
  · In the "browse" dropdown, select "Network Shares", and type in the name of the server hosting the share where the backup file exists, then "Add server to list"
  · Select your source server from the "Folders" tree, then the share hosting the backup file that you want to restore, and finally the file name

* Remember that you are restoring from another server, so the SQL Backup Agent Service startup account on the target server will need read access to the backup file's share. If the permissions are invalid, SQL Backup will show no backup files to restore.

   · Click "Next". You are offered a choice of restoring over an existing database, or creating a new one.
   · Choose an option and click "Next". Choose to leave the database operational or set to standby. Click "Next"
   · Verify the restore summary and click "Finish"
