SQL Backup Agent doesn't start on named instance

Category: Troubleshooting & error messages

Versions: 4,5
Platform: Any

When SQL Backup Agent Service for a named instance is started, is stays in 'starting' status (hangs). This may be because the server components did not install correctly.

First examine the registry entry:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\SQLBackupAgent_<instancename>\ImagePath.

This should show the file path to the instance of SQBCoreService that is responsible for that particular instance. At the end of the image path should be a -i argument, specifying the instance name. For instance:

C:\Program Files\Red Gate\SQL Backup\<instancename>\SQBCoreService.exe -i <instancename>

After changing the image path to this format, re-run sqbserversetup.exe. This should install the service correctly so that it will start from the local computer's services console.
