Archive Service reporting MAPI_E_NETWORK_ERROR when connection to Exchange

Category: Troubleshooting & error messages

Platforms: Outlook 2007
After viewing mailbox information, ESA may report the following error: MAPI_E_NETWORK_ERROR. This can happen on some configurations when Outlook 2007 MAPI needs to be updated.

If your Archive Service computer uses Outlook 2007 MAPI, some installations ship with a DLL that causes a problem for Exchange Server Archiver in "service mode". To see if you are affected by this problem, run the Archive Service in "console mode".

Log on using the ESA User account
Stop the Archive Service from Services Control Panel
Open a command prompt and run
%programfiles%\red gate\ESA Archive Service\RedGate.ExchangeArchiver.ArchiveService.exe /CONSOLE

Attempt to expand the mailboxes in the Admin Console's Dashboard tab. If information is retrieved (mailbox size does not say "unavailable"), then you probably suffer from this issue. To fix it, follow these steps:

Press CTRL-C in the command prompt that you had opened
Install Outlook 2007 Service Pack 1
Run Windows Update, and accept updates for Microsoft Office (specifically, MS09-060)
Start the Archive Service

Note that SP1 is not a requirement for Exchange Server Archiver, however, this issue can happen in certain environments.
