Attempting to access archived message results in continuous prompt for credentials
Category: Troubleshooting & error messages
Date: 12 Jan 2010
Product: Exchange Server Archiver
When you attempt to retrieve an archived message using the link in the "stub" email, you may be prompted repeatedly for your username and password.
The reason that the Outlook add-in does not automatically retrieve the archived message is also directly related to the continuous prompt for credentials. When accessing the User Archive Access Service, which is hosted in IIS, the add-in uses HTTP to transfer the message in the same way the web browser does, therefore both operations are impacted by Microsoft's "zone security". When requests are made in the Internet Zone, the authentication procedure works differently than in the Intranet Zone.
When in the Intranet Zone, authentication is handled transparently by Internet Explorer, and therefore by the Exchange Server Archiver's Outlook add-in. In order to stop the prompt for credentials, add the web address of the ESA UAA Service to the Intranet Zone using the "Internet Options" Control Panel applet in Windows. In some configurations, it may also be necessary to add the UAA website to the "trusted sites" list as well.
If this issue affects all of your Exchange users, consider changing the URL of the UAA Service website to one that would match the address of a site in your local Intranet Zone, or create a domain policy that adds the site to this zone.
