Creating a CNAME record for the User Archive Access Service

The User Archive Access Service is used to access archived email messages from the Outlook plug-in. This server is implemented as a web service, so if the address of the service changes, it would necessitate a full restore of all messages back into the information store and a re-archival if the server hosting the UAAS is broken or de-commissioned.

To avoid this, a CNAME record can be created in DNS so that another UAAS server can be brought online and used immediately after changing DNS to point the CNAME entry for the UAAS to the name of the new server. A CNAME (canonical name) is an "alias" that will route all requests for a DNS address for a resource that doesn't physically exist to one that does exist.

To create a CNAME record, first locate your DNS server. This can usually be found for your network by running "ipconfig /all" on your command prompt.

Log onto this server using an account that has access to the DNS manager in the administrative tools program group.

 · Click the DNS Server object for your server in the left pane of the console, and then expand the server object to expand the tree.
 · Expand Forward Lookup Zones.
 · Under Forward Lookup Zones, right-click the zone that you want (for example, example.com), and then click New Alias (CNAME).
 · In the Alias name box, type the alias that you want. For example, type ESAUserArchive.
 · In the Fully qualified name (FQDN) for target host box, type the fully qualified host name of the host computer that you want. For example, type www.example.com, and then click OK.
