User Archive Access Service is unable to retrieve mailbox GUID

Category: Troubleshooting & error messages

Product: Exchange Server Archiver
After setting up the website for the User Archive Access Service, the ESA Admin Console may report this error:
"Service does not seem to have been installed properly. Do you want to continue anyway?"
Additionally, you may see the following in the UAAS logs:
07:51:45.230|Warn |GetMailboxGuid |8 |Unable to retrieve mailbox GUID for mailbox:
07:51:45.230|Warn |SetUpSearchResults |8 |An error was raised during the search: The system is unable to determine your mailbox.
07:51:45.230|Debug |SetUpSearchResults |8 |Permissions failure during search.

This error occurs when "Anonymous Logon" is selected in the security properties for the UAAS virtual directory. The User Archive Access Service requires "Windows Authentication" in order to access the user's mailbox properties. To change the authentication method for the UAAS, open the Microsoft IIS Administrator tool, navigate to the UAAS web application on the Defaule Web Site, right-click it, and select Properties.

On the "Directory Security" tab, click "Edit", and select "Integrated Windows Authentication". De-select "Allow Anonymous Access".

The Exchange Server Archiver installer will perform this check for you by default, however, it is entirely possible that the setting has been changed or the UAAS web application has been re-created manually by an administrator.
