AjaxControlToolkit incompatibility causing application being profiled to crash

When profiling an ASP .NET web application that uses Microsoft's AjaxControlToolkit, the following or similar error may occur in the application being profiled:
Method not found: 'Void _ANTS_MeasureFunctionCall_(Int32, Int32)'
When Performance Profiler is collecting line-level timings, the AJAX library can interfere with the Profiler's core library. To prevent this, you may either choose to profile only at the method-level in the settings, or simply delete the symbols for AjaxControlToolkit (AjaxControlToolkit.pdb). This will prevent line-level data from being collected from AjaxControlToolkit and avoid the crash.
