SQL Storage Compress - 6.1
Installing and activating SQL Storage Compress
SQL Storage Compress comprises:
- The HyperBac Compression Engine Components
required to create and use SQL Storage Compress databases.
- The SQL Storage Compress user interface (optional)
includes a database browser to help you analyze the space savings you could achieve by compressing your databases and a wizard to help you create compressed databases.
These are installed and upgraded separately.
Important: if the HyperBac Control Service is already installed, follow the instructions for Upgrading SQL Storage Compress.
Installing SQL Storage Compress
- Download SQL Storage Compress from the Red Gate website.
- Extract the contents of the downloaded zip file to the server that will host your compressed databases.
Installing the HyperBac Compression Engine Components
3. Open Step 1_HyperBac Engine and install the HyperBac Compression Engine Components:
- for 64-bit machines, run HyperBac_Installer_x64.exe
- for 32-bit machines, run HyperBac_Installer_x86.exe
The components include a Windows service (the HyperBac Control Service), and several utilities (HyperBac Configuration Manager, HyperBac WinExtractor, and the HyperUtil command line utility).
By default, the HyperBac Compression Engine Components are installed in %ProgramFiles(x86)%\Red Gate\HyperBac on 64-bit machines and %ProgramFiles%\Red Gate\HyperBac on 32-bit machines.
4. When the components installation completes, you are given the option to open the Activation Dialog for HyperBac Tools.

Unless you have already purchased a SQL Storage Compress license, clear the checkbox then click Finish. See Activating SQL Storage Compress below for information about activating.
Installing the SQL Storage Compress user interface
Open Step 2_SSC UI and run SQL_Storage_Compress_6.0.exe to install the SQL Storage Compress user interface. The user interface is not required to create compressed databases.
Activating SQL Storage Compress
When you first install SQL Storage Compress, you have a 14 day trial period to evaluate the product. If you need more time to evaluate or want to purchase the product, contact dba.info@red-gate.com.
You will need a serial number to activate SQL Storage Compress. This can be found on your invoice or by going to www.red-gate.com/myserialnumbers.
Note: if you have previously installed the HyperBac Compression Engine Components in order to use SQL HyperBac or SQL Virtual Restore, your SQL Storage Compress trial period may have already expired. If this is the case, contact dba.info@red-gate.com for a trial extension.
Activating with the SQL Storage Compress user interface
To activate your license:
- Open the SQL Storage Compress user interface and click Activate license at the bottom of the window, or from the Help menu, select Enter Serial Number.
- In the Activate SQL Storage Compress dialog, enter your serial number and click Activate.
Activating with HyperBac Configuration Manager
If you have not installed the SQL Storage Compress user interface, you can activate your license from the HyperBac Configuration Manager. From the system tray, double-click the HyperBac Configuration Manager
icon to open the HyperBac Configuration Manager. You can view your license status and activate your license from the General tab.

Deactivating SQL Storage Compress
If you later need to deactivate SQL Storage Compress (for example, to move the license to another server), open the user interface and from the Help menu, select Deactivate Serial Number.
If you have not installed the SQL Storage Compress user interface, you can deactivate your license from the HyperBac Configuration Manager (see above).
Note: any SQL Storage Compress databases that are currently running on the instance will become unavailable when you deactivate. For information on accessing compressed databases when SQL Storage Compress is not activated or installed, see Converting SQL Storage Compress databases to native format.
HyperBac Online
If you have upgraded to SQL Storage Compress from HyperBac Online, contact dba.info@red-gate.com.
