WSAECONNRESET error when archiving or retrieving mailbox sizes

When you use Exchange Server Archiver to run an archive or when the Admin Console retrieves mailboxes sizes for an Exchange 2007 system, you may receive the following error:

ArchiveService

COMException logging on to Exchange Server: System.Runtime.InteropServices.COMException (0x81002746): Error in IMsgServiceAdmin::ConfigureMsgService: WSAECONNRESET
   at Redemption.IRDOSession.LogonExchangeMailbox(String User, String ServerName)
   at r.<>c__DisplayClass2.<GetMasterSession>b__0()

The most common cause is that the Archive Service user has been hidden from the Exchange Address List. To stop hiding the user from the Exchange Address List, follow the steps below for your version of Exchange.

Exchange 2007

  1. Open the Exchange Management Console and expand Recipient Configuration, Mailbox.
  2. Right-click your Archive Service user mailbox and click Properties.
  3. On the General tab, ensure the Hide from Exchange address lists check box is cleared.

  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart the ESA Archive Service using Windows Services.

Exchange 2003

  1. Open Active Directory User and Computers from the Microsoft Exchange All Programs group.
  2. Navigate to your Archive Service user and click Properties.
  3. Select the Exchange Advanced tab, and ensure the Hide from Exchange address lists check box is cleared.

  4. Click OK.
  5. Restart the ESA Archive Service using Windows Services.
