In the User Archive Access (UAA) Service, when you click a link to an archived message that is not from your own mailbox, but which you have permissions to read, you may see the following error message:

User <username> does not have permission to read mailbox <mailboxname>.

To fix this, you must force an update of the permission to read the mailbox; follow the instructions below for your version of Exchange Server.

Exchange Server 2007

  1. Start an Exchange Management Shell session.
  2. At the prompt, type:

    remove-mailboxpermission -identity "domain\user2" -accessrights ReadPermission -user "domain\user1"

where user1 is the user who is trying to access the mailbox, and user2 is the owner of the mailbox.

  3. Type Y to confirm.
  4. Type:

    add-mailboxpermission -identity "domain\user2" -accessrights ReadPermission -user "domain\user1"

  5. Type Y to confirm.
  6. Close the Exchange Management Shell session.
  7. Refresh the UAA Service Web page.

User1 should now be able to access user2's mailbox from the UAA Service.

Exchange 2003

  1. Open Active Directory Users and Computers on the Exchange server.
  2. Navigate to user2, where user2 is the owner of the mailbox you are trying to access.
  3. Right-click user2, and click Properties.
  4. On the Exchange Advanced tab, click Mailbox Rights.
  5. Clear the Read permissions check box for user1, where user1 is the user who is trying to access the mailbox.
  6. Click Apply.
  7. Select the Read permissions check box for user1.
  8. Click OK on the open dialog boxes.
  9. Refresh the UAA Service Web page.

User1 should now be able to access user2's mailbox from the UAA Service.
