Upgrading Exchange Server Archiver

Category: Installing & upgrading
Date: June 2010
Product: Exchange Server Archiver

Note that when you upgrade Exchange Server Archiver, you cannot later revert to an earlier version because the Archive Stores will not be accessible by the earlier version.

To upgrade Exchange Server Archiver, you must:

  1. Collect some information about your existing Exchange Server Archiver installation (see Preparing to upgrade).

You will need this information when you upgrade the services and components.

  2. Install the latest Admin Console, and then upgrade the services and components (see Upgrading).

Preparing to upgrade

Before you start the upgrade process, collect the following information:

  • Archive Service and Storage Service user names
  • Archive Service and Storage Service connection protocols
  • Storage Service Indexing Catalog location
  • User Archive Access Service URL
  • User Archive Access Service Web site configuration

You will need this information when you upgrade the Exchange Server Archiver services. The following sections describe where to find this information.

Archive Service and Storage Service user names

To find the Archive Service and Storage Service user names:

  1. In Windows Administrative Tools, open Services.
  2. Make a note of the user names in the Log On As field for the ESA Archive Service and ESA Storage Service.

    Service_list

Archive Service and Storage Service connection protocols

To find the Archive Service and Storage Service connection protocols:

  1. In the Exchange Server Archiver Admin Console, click the Maintenance tab.
  2. Right-click each service, and select Properties.

    Archive_service_properties

The first three characters in the URI field show the connection protocol for the service (tcp, or icp).

Storage Service Indexing Catalog location

To find the Storage Service Indexing Catalog location:

  1. In Windows Administrative Tools, open Computer Management, then select Services and Applications > Indexing Service.
  2. Make a note of the path in the Location field for Exchange Server Archiver.

    Indexing_Service_on_local_machine

User Archive Access Service URL

To find the User Archive Access Service URL:

  1. In the Exchange Server Archiver Admin Console, click the Maintenance tab.
  2. Right-click the User Archive Access Service, and select Properties.

    User_archive_Access_Service_Properties

User Archive Access Service Web site configuration

To find information about the User Archive Access Service Web site configuration:

  1. In Windows Administrative Tools, open Internet Information Services.
  2. In the Web Sites folder, locate the virtual directory that matches the directory in the User Archive Access Service URL ("UAAService" in this example), and make a note of:
    • the Web site name that contains this virtual directory
    • the virtual directory name
  3. Note the port number shown after the ":" in the User Archive Access Service URL, if present ("80" in this example).

If there is no port number shown, leave the Port text box blank when you upgrade the UAA Service.

Upgrading

  1. Install the Admin Console by running the installer that you downloaded from the Red Gate Web site.

This installs the Admin Console, and places the installers for the services and components in your installation folder. By default, these are copied to:

    %programfiles%\Red Gate\ESA Admin Console\Installers

  2. Upgrade the services and components by running the installers in the following order, choosing the correct installer (x86 or x64) for your machine:
    1. ESA Archive Service
    2. ESA Storage Service
    3. ESA User Archive Access Service. (If you originally installed into a new website, you will need to stop that website to perform the upgrade.)
    4. (Optional) ESA Outlook Web Access Add-In. (Must be installed on Exchange Server.)
    5. (Optional) ESA Outlook Add-In. (Must be installed on Outlook client machines.)
  3. To ensure the Indexing Service catalog is up-to-date:
    1. Run mmc to open the Microsoft Management Console.
    2. If necessary, add the Indexing Service snap-in.
    3. Under Exchange Server Archiver, Directories, select each Archive Store folder and rescan.
