Category: Installing & upgrading
Date: June 2010
Product: Exchange Server Archiver

When you install the Exchange Server Archiver Archive Service and User Archive Access (UAA) Service, you must install a version of MAPI (Messaging Application Program Interface) that is compatible with your configuration, as summarized below.

MAPI is installed automatically when you install the Exchange Server 2003 Admin Tools or Outlook® 2003 or later.

MAPI versions

Multi-Exchange version configurations

If your configuration includes more than one version of Exchange:

  • On the Archive Service server, install a version of MAPI CDO or Outlook MAPI that is compatible with all the versions of Exchange.

or

  • Install multiple Archive Services on different servers, and install versions of MAPI that are compatible with your versions of Exchange.

For example, if you want to archive mailboxes on Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2010, you could install MAPI CDO 6.5.8039 on one Archive Service to support Exchange 2003 archiving, and Outlook 2010 on the other Archive Service to support Exchange 2010 archiving.

You can then use Manage Exchange Organizations and Domains to ensure the correct Archive Service is selected for each Exchange Server.
