Archiving does not complete
Category: Troubleshooting & error messages
Date: June 2010
Product: Exchange Server Archiver
When the archiving process does not complete, an alert is displayed in the Alerts tab. There are a number of reasons why the process may not complete:
Stop processing messages after... timed out
Copy back is selected for one or more mailboxes
Archive Store disk is full
A service has stopped
Invalid license
Permission was denied
Stop processing messages after... timed out
You have set the Stop processing messages after time in the rule schedule, and the archive process has not completed within the specified time.
Messages that match the archive rule but have not yet been processed remain unarchived. The next archive run starts again at the first mailbox. If the archive process repeatedly does not complete, mailboxes at the end of the archive process will remain unarchived and you are recommended to extend the time for which you want the archive task to run.
To fix this, edit the rule's schedule:
- clear the check box if you want to the archive process to run until it has processed all messages that match the archive rule
- or edit the rule's schedule to increase the processing time
Note that the first archive run using a particular rule will take longer than subsequent archive runs using the same rule.
Copy back is selected for one or more mailboxes
If you select a mailbox to be copied back, the copy-back task overrides any archive rules that have been applied and the mailbox is not archived.
On the Maintenance menu, click Copy Back to Exchange Server, and clear the check boxes for the mailboxes that you want to archive. The mailboxes will be removed from the copy back task.
Archive Store disk is full
The disk on which the Archive Store is located is full.
Move the Archive Store to a larger disk; for more information, see Managing Archive Stores.
A service has stopped
One of the services has stopped.
You can use the Maintenance tab in the Admin Console to check the status of the services.
Check the services in Administrator Tools, Services, and restart them if necessary.
Invalid license
You do not have a valid license because:
- Your trial has expired.
Purchase a license, and enter the serial number to activate the license.
- You have scheduled more mailboxes to be archived than your entitlement allows.
Purchase an extension to your license, or reduce the number of mailboxes that have an archive rule applied.
For more information, see Licensing.
Permission was denied
The Archive Service user was denied permission to open one or more mailboxes, and therefore they could not be archived.
Ensure that the Archive Service user has the required permissions. For details of the permissions required, see Creating the Archive Service user.
Keywords: unarchived messages, copyback, copy-back, access denied
