Moving Exchange Server Archiver to a new server

You may want to move Exchange Server Archiver and the Archive Stores to a new server configuration, for example if you are upgrading your network.

To move Exchange Server Archiver to a new server:

  1. Note down the User Archive Access (UAA) Service URL:
    1. In the old Exchange Server Archiver Admin Console, on the Maintenance tab, right-click the UAA Service and click Properties.

      User_archive_Access_Service_Properties

    2. Make a note of the URL to access archived messages.
    3. Make a note of the port number, which is shown after the ":" in the User Archive Access Service URL ("80" in this example).
  2. Note down the UAA Service website configuration:
    1. In Windows Administrative Tools, open Internet Information Services.
    2. In the Web Sites folder, locate the virtual directory that matches the directory in the User Archive Access Service URL.
    3. Make a note of the virtual directory name.
  3. Install Exchange Server Archiver in its new location.

When you install the UAA Service, use the details you noted in steps 2 and 3. If you used a CNAME for the address of the UAA Service (recommended), ensure you update the CNAME to point to the new host name and flush the DNS cache (using ipconfig /flushdns).

For full details of how to install, see the Learning topics, or to download a pdf file containing all the information see Installing Exchange Server Archiver.

  4. Move the Archive Stores:
    1. In the old Admin Console, on the Maintenance tab, right-click each Archive Store in turn, and click Detach Archive Store.
    2. Use your file manager to move the Archive Store folders to the new server.
    3. In the new Admin Console, right-click the Storage Service on the new server and click Attach Store.

When you have completed the move, check for errors in the Maintenance tab and the Alerts tab.

You are recommended to run an archive task to verify the new setup; to do this, right-click a rule in the Archive Rules tab, and click Run Rule.
