Upgrading Exchange Server when using Exchange Server Archiver

When you upgrade Exchange (for example from Exchange Server 2007 to Exchange Server 2010), and you are using Exchange Server Archiver, Exchange Server Archiver finds the moved mailboxes on the new server, so there is very little to do aside from verifying the new setup.

If you want to move Exchange Server Archiver to a new server, do this after you have upgraded Exchange.

Upgrading Exchange

When you use the Exchange Move Mailbox command to move the mailboxes to the new Exchange server, Exchange Server Archiver detects the change of location (because the mailbox GUID remains the same).

When you have moved the mailboxes, restart the Exchange Server Archiver Admin Console to see the new configuration, and check for errors in the Maintenance tab and the Alerts tab.

If a mailbox inherited its archive rule from a group (a storage group or Active Directory folder) before it was moved, ensure that you apply an archive rule to the group in the new hierarchy. If a mailbox inherits a different rule after the move, messages could be archived to a different Archive Store; however, the old messages can still be retrieved from the old store, so it is not necessary to move them.

You are recommended to run an archive task to verify the new setup; to do this, right-click a rule in the Archive Rules tab, and click Run Rule.

Moving Exchange Server Archiver to a new server

When you have moved the mailboxes to the new Exchange, you can move Exchange Server Archiver to a new server (if required).

To move Exchange Server Archiver to a new server:

  1. Note down the User Archive Access (UAA) Service URL:
    1. In the old Exchange Server Archiver Admin Console, on the Maintenance tab, right-click the UAA Service and click Properties.

      User_archive_Access_Service_Properties

    2. Make a note of the URL to access archived messages.
    3. Make a note of the port number, which is shown after the ":" in the User Archive Access Service URL ("80" in this example).
  2. Note down the UAA Service website configuration:
    1. In Windows Administrative Tools, open Internet Information Services.
    2. In the Web Sites folder, locate the virtual directory that matches the directory in the User Archive Access Service URL.
    3. Make a note of the virtual directory name.
  3. Install Exchange Server Archiver in its new location.

When you install the UAA Service, use the details you noted in steps 2 and 3. If you used a CNAME for the address of the UAA Service (recommended), ensure you update the CNAME to point to the new host name and flush the DNS cache (using ipconfig /flushdns).

For full details of how to install, see the Learning topics, or to download a pdf file containing all the information see Installing Exchange Server Archiver.

  4. Move the Archive Stores:
    1. In the old Admin Console, on the Maintenance tab, right-click each Archive Store in turn, and click Detach Archive Store.
    2. Use your file manager to move the Archive Store folders to the new server.
    3. In the new Admin Console, right-click the Storage Service on the new server and click Attach Store.
