Move Archive Server

Hello

I have been using ESA in "copy Entire message" mode and it has been working fine, but the server ESA currently sits on is an old box that i am replacing.
I have installed ESA on the new server and this time would like to use "full archive" mode to free up space on exchange. I have set a rule on my mailbox to process all mails over over 3 years old, but when running the rule no messages are archived.

This is most likely due to the messages been marked as archived on the old server in copy mode. Is there a way to reset the archive on the old server and then start a full archive of the mailbox on the new server?

Thanks

Cannot open mailbox (then the users name) Ensure the Archive Service user 'Archive@.com' has permissions to open this mailbox, the Exchange information store is running, and Active Directory is running correctly.
Changing the criteria for the archive rule is never going to cause ESA to do a copyback. For that you have to manually copy the mail back using a copyback rule.

Hi All

Was wondering if anyone could help me out, got a mailbox in a rule to archive after 90 days, i have created a new rule for 180 days and change the mailbox to now use this rule, but all mail in the mailbox after 90 days is still archived ?

Run the schedule task but not de-archiving the mail?

Any ideas?
RE: VERY SLOW backups

As per my PMs to you, I’m afraid we’ve not got any experience of Backup Exec, though I suspect, as you mention, that it’s related to the number of files in the store, and BE’s handling of this. You tried NT Backup to do the same and it was estimating well over a day. I am afraid there’s nothing we can do to change this – it’s a BE/NT Backup issue not an ESA one.

The only thing I can suggest is to back up smaller chunks of data.

VERY SLOW backups

Been trying to backup the archivestore flat files and also the ESA catalog directory using Backup Exec 12.5.

Have tried this with compression (both hardware and software) and also no compression, on a DL 380 Server. The backups take an extraordinary amount of time and throughput is as little as 18MB/Min (compare this with our SQL at 3GB/Min). Yes I konw that there is a difference in file type ie lots of small files versus one large one but.............why so painfully slow? It's blowing our backup windows.

This is a disk to disk backup (within the same server).

Error in repair store.

Hi

We are currently on the latest build of Exchange Archiver. (V 3.0.1.100)
We have some messages that will not show up between a 2 week period and when we try to access them it shows an error in the console like: Object not found in meta store (Guid: 98asdf-9asdhf-asodif-w2eias-u9ahsdfasf). Store Users may need repairing.

I have run a repair on the Archive Store and it has come back failed with an error showing:

Storage Engine
Error in repair store.
The input stream is not a valid binary format. The starting contents (in bytes) are: 5F-A3-98-96-32-16-CD-69-57-CD-5A-04-00-00-00-00-FB ...

Has anyone else had this issue?

If we can not get the messages back via tasks in the console would it be possible to find a backup with the message store for the time frame and simply copy them back into the archivestore folder?

Any help would be appreciated as this has been an on going issue for a while now and nothing that we have tried seems to be working?

Regards

RE: Remote User Authentication Required?

I would imagine to properly troubleshoot this, we would need an HTTP trace from Fiddler. On the local LAN, Windows will transparently pass credentials through the WinInet layer. If the UAAS URL is not in the local intranet zone, for instance if your Windows domain is mycompany.local and your UAAS is mailarchive.mycompany.com, you will have to add the UAAS URL to each computer's Local Intranet zone explicitly or you will be prompted for credentials.

The only reason I can think of for multiple prompts is that you have a web proxy between you and the UAAS, and that proxy does not have power to delegate credentials to the UAAS.

This is all entirely dependent on your network topology, which we know nothing about. I would recommend trying to trace the network activity using Fiddler, and from there you can configure any server inbetween your user and the UAAS so that it can pass credentials.

It will be the UAA Service or the OWA add-in that he is connecting to. How does he connect to Outlook? If he uses Outlook, get him to check that he has the UAA Service URL in his Intranet Zone in his browser settings. If it is via OWA, please send the OWA add-in logs from the server.

Remote User Authentication Required?

I am having a problem with a remote (laptop) user. The machine is Windows XP/SP2, ESA Outlook Client Add-In 3, and Outlook 2007.

When he is hard wired to the LAN Outlook opens as expected, no problems. When he opens Outlook from home using his broadband connection to the Internet he recieves up to four login prompts requiring authentication to one of the ESA Services (he did not give me a clear indication as to which). We are using Outlook RPC over HTTP(S) with cached mode enabled.

Shouldn't Windows authentication take care of this behind the curtain? I mean, he has never had to manually authenticate to Outlook!

Any Ideas?

Thanx in advance!
Unable to display message - Outlook Today

With ESA Outlook Add-in installed and Outlook 2007 Opened, click to select 'Mailbox - <USERNAME>' (Outlook Today)

Then, click the calendar folder or shortcut.

Then, click back into the mailbox folder.

You should recieve the following error:

Unable to display message. If this problem persists, please restart Outlook'

I'm sure this has nothing to do with the version of the operating system, but probably more to do with the mailbox. If you have installed the ESA Outlook add-in, then it retrieves the location of the UAAS from a hidden message in the inbox and uses that address to submit search requests to. Otherwise it does not know where to submit the search request.

If you archive that mailbox, even if there are no messages to archive or that meet the archive rule criteria, that should create the ESA hidden message and make the warning in the add-in go away.

Hopefully this helps.

Seems to have worked!!
