RE: "Common Language Runtime detected an invalid program." error

I'm afraid we're still investigating precisely how to fix this in the tool - the IL that gets rewritten apparently doesn't look in any way "wrong" but investigations are ongoing.

A little more information was discovered today though - it seems the problem can be triggered by something as simple as an empty try/catch block in the constructor for a generic. Other causes are using, lock or foreach statements.

Another workaround asides from turning off line-level may be to move the constructor code into it's own method, and call this from within the constructor. It seems in some scenarios that is enough to stop the problem happening.

Any update on the timeline for fixing this? I desperately need line-level timings (and it's not an option for me to remove Windows updates). Thanks.

RE: ANTS Crashing ASPNET Dev IIS Server on Profiler Launch

I just downloaded the trial of ANTS 7.4 last night and am encountering this same issue. When I attempt to profile my Silverlight 5 through the ANTS menu in Visual Studio 2012, WebDev.WebServer40.exe immediately crashes. The only thing I can determine is that it is launching the Visual Studio 2010 version of webdev.webserver40.exe.

However when I run the Performance Analyzer it launches the correct version of the web server, and does not crash. Only Memory Analyzer is crashing for me.

I'm on windows 7 64, visual studio 2012.

Hi,
Currently this issue is indeed slated to be fixed in 8.1 - I don't have a precise lead time on 8.1 but it's in the order of a few weeks rather than a few months.
Unless anything disasterous happens, I'd hope this is indeed fixed soon.

One of my colleagues mentioned that log4net may well utilise the AllowPartiallyTrustedCallers attribute; which may explain the problem.

Are you able to easily disable references to log4net for testing? The other option may be to strong-name sign your assemblies.

RE: Problem starting prog from Ants profiler 6

Hello James,

Thanks for looking into this.

We do not use any security model attributes in our code.
The windows event logs does not give any extra information. They do not register anything of the crash.

I Did install our program on a different (VMWare vritual) XP machine, and installed the Ants 8 Beta on it.
Without profiling our program runs fine. When I start our program from within Ants profiler it will crash after a few seconds.
Attaching to the program once it is started is not posible on XP as you know.

What more can we do to find out what is the problem?

Only profiling via attach (on win7) is no option for us. Profiling the startup sequence is much harder then. But the biggest problem is the lack of detail and the hitcount that is not available then.

Thanks,
Jaap
Please send for me that utility.

Ah okay, it's good to hear that sampling at least works!

I think you may have already read about how certain security updates have caused similar errors recently. May I ask what operating system you are running? The update KB2742596 was causing problems on Windows XP and Windows Server but you can also find it's equivalent on other OS's here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/security/bulletin/ms13-004

Could you kindly check if you have that update or it's equivalent installed and try uininstalling it?

RE: Problem starting prog from Ants profiler 6

Hi - thanks for posting, and sorry you're having some problems.

Unfortunately if the application crashes under profiling, there's no simple answer. A whole host of possible causes exist.

Firstly- can you try the new APP 8 Beta to see if the problem still occurs? You can find that here

If so, then it's more likely something specific to your application. If it worked OK in .NET 2.0 but not on a newer framework, then one possible cause is differences in the .NET security model. Specifically, do you have any assemblies where you're using the "AllowPartiallyTrustedCallers" attribute? This is know to cause problems.

If not, then can you check the Windows event log to see if there are any messages from around the time the application terminated, as these can often be useful.

If I change the profiling mode to "Sample method-level timings (fastest, least detail, no hit counts)" then profiling does work. However, not much detail is provided. Any idea as to how I can get one of the other, more detailed methods to work?
